11 Resources for Teen Learning

School is underway and that means it's homework time. We have several online resources to support your older kids and teens with their homework, exam prep and more. 

1. Alexander Street: Theatre in Video

Theatre in Video contains more than 275 definitive performances of the world's leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video. Includes the complete works of Shakespeare, and representing hundreds of leading playwrights, actors and directors. Included are landmark performances such as The Iceman Cometh, Awake and Sing, Dom Juan, Bérénice, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Playboy of the Western World, Krapp's Last Tape. Notable actors include Claire Bloom, Laurence Olivier, Colleen Dewhurst, Richard Dreyfuss, Walter Matthau, Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Mirren and more.

2. Brainfuse HelpNow

Brainfuse supports students from kindergarten up to grade 12. Students can chat live with tutors and create study aids customized to their learning needs. You don’t have to fuse your brain trying to find them things to do. Leave it to Brainfuse.

3. Canada in Context

Canada In Context is your go-to resource for authoritative reference material that is focuses on the Canadian perspective. With news articles, images, audio files, academic journals and more, it’s the perfect resource to support social studies learning. Write a paper, do an inquiry project or create a timeline—the possibilities are endless!

4. Learning Express Library

Practice tests and tutorial courses to help you succeed with academic or licensing exams. Immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and individualized analysis of results. Many tests are from American sources. Now includes Computer Skills training for a variety of Microsoft applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook etc.). Includes two Canadian Citizenship Practice Exams (as well as American).

5. L'encyclopédie Découverte

6. National Geographic Kids

Play games, watch videos, learn about animals and get fun facts in National Geographic Kids. New issues are available online within 90 days after publication.

7. Science Reference Source

Science Reference Source is your go-to science research content resource. It contains full text for hundreds of science magazines, journals, encyclopedias, reference books and a vast collection of images. With more than 1,000 science experiments and more than 2,000 science videos, Science Reference Source helps students in grades 7-12 explore everything from health and medicine to mathematics, physics, scientists, technology and wildlife.

8. Solaro

Solaro provides the same great Alberta-specific curriculum information you find in their Keys and SNAP publications. You can create a Solaro account and work through course lessons, reviews and quizzes, tracking your progress as you go. It covers grades 3-12 Alberta curriculum.

9. Teen Health & Wellness

Teen Health & Wellness is your safe space for curricular and self-help support. As a trusted source for what matters most to teens, this resource provides support for mental health, life skills, mindfulness, bullying, fostering relationships and more. You can read stories for teens, by teens, submit a question to Dr. Jan for advice and even visit the Calm Room to watch kitties play! There is also a listing of Alberta-specific crisis hotlines for teens.

10. World Book Encyclopedia

World Book is your one-stop shop reference tool. It includes full encyclopedia content and is supplemented with online books, primary sources, website links and special reports. It even includes a citation builder, dictionary, resource guides and the ability to create individual research accounts so students can save their articles and citations.

11. Oxford English Dictionary

Find the definition for all of those tricky words in your English class. Check out the Oxford English Dictionary for the ultimate authority on the English language.
