EDMONTON, AB, Wednesday, May 15, 2024 — The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is excited to announce the election of new Board Chair James Crossman, the re-elected Vice-Chair Rosalie Russnak, as well as the appointment of Mark Hoosein to its esteemed Board of Trustees. Hoosein commenced his role on May 1, while Crossman and Russnak commenced their roles on May 15.
James Crossman brings a wealth of engineering and project management experience to his role as Board Chair. As a Data Centre Design Engineer with PowerHouse Data Centre Group, James has a strong background in delivering projects to a broad range of clients. His belief in the intersection of bold leadership, creative vision, and technical excellence aligns with his passion for public libraries, making him an important addition to the EPL Board.
Rosalie Russnak, the new Vice-Chair, is a finance professional with senior experience at prominent Edmonton-based companies. Her strategic financial expertise and commitment to community building make her an important asset to the Board. Rosalie’s love for libraries started at a young age, and she believes in their role in building strong communities and vibrant cities.
Mark Hoosein, the newest trustee, serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). His leadership in strategic execution and governance, combined with his deep connection to EPL, will contribute significantly to the Board’s work. Mark’s passion for libraries stems from his childhood experiences at the old Castle Downs Branch, and he is eager to contribute to the community’s enrichment through EPL.
“I am thrilled for the opportunity to chair the Edmonton Public Library Board and work alongside such dedicated individuals,” said James Crossman. “Together, we will continue to strengthen the library’s impact on our community.”
The EPL Board consists of 10 trustees, including one member of City Council. Trustees are appointed by City Council. In addition to governance, the EPL Board is responsible for advocating to ensure stakeholders understand and support Library initiatives. Other EPL Board responsibilities include CEO recruitment and performance evaluation, Board policy development, ensuring compliance with financial and legislative requirements, identifying and mitigating risks and, together with EPL’s Executive Team, establishing the Library’s strategic direction.
EPL would like to thank departing trustee, Kenna Houncaren, for her impactful leadership and contributions as Board Chair and her ongoing commitment to the public library.
“I look forward to collaborating with James, Rosalie, and Mark on the EPL Board to ensure access to diverse knowledge and information for all members of the community. Their dedication to the principles and protection of intellectual freedom aligns perfectly with EPL’s mission and values,” said EPL Chief Executive Officer Pilar Martinez.
