The Library and Information Studies Alumni Association (LISAA) presented Pilar Martinez, Chief Executive Officer of the Edmonton Public Library (EPL), with the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award at a celebration event on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Representing the graduates of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alberta (U of A), the LISAA facilitates social and professional networking, as well as participates in fundraising to support scholarships.
The Distinguished Alumni Award is given to someone who has made a significant contribution to any or all of the following: the library profession; the School of Library and Information Studies at the U of A; the advancement of knowledge.
Martinez, nominated by colleagues, was awarded due to her strong advocacy for intellectual freedom, initiation of groundbreaking programs and services such as the addition of social workers at the downtown branch and other locations, Leading From Any Position training for staff, the popular Forward Thinking Speaker Series and EPL’s Community-Led Philosophy.
Her nomination also praised her extensive volunteer participation, along with her overall impactful leadership in public libraries and the difference it is making in Edmonton.
After serving as the Manager of Public Services with the Yellowhead Regional Library, Martinez joined EPL in 2000 where she served in a variety of roles including Deputy CEO. She was appointed CEO in July 2015.
