EDMONTON, AB, July 31, 2023 –
With the support of Alberta Music, the Edmonton Public Library is delighted to announce their first Musician in Residence, Mallory Chipman.
“It is with gratitude and excitement that I step into the role of Musician in Residence with EPL and the rich, vibrant network of artists and creators here in Edmonton,” shares Mallory. “To be the inaugural artist in this position is an honour I do not take lightly, and I look forward to facilitating musical opportunities and celebrating the artistic excellence in our community over the coming year.”
Mallory is an award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and educator from Treaty Six Territory in Canada. She artfully shares her stories through song, captivating listeners with her powerful and vulnerable prose.
Her EP album, As Though I Had Wings, was released earlier this year and Amplify Magazine described it as “some of the finest folk rock currently being made.”
“The Musician in Residence program is well on its way with the announcement of our inaugural member!” says Pilar Martinez, CEO of EPL. “We are thrilled to be supporting the city’s established and aspiring music community and feel fortunate to have Mallory as our trailblazing artist on this legacy project.”
Alberta Music is also pleased to see the launch of the Musician in Residence program at EPL. “This program will not only showcase the wealth of talent in the City of Edmonton, but also act to help further develop the talent and nurture young and upcoming artists and songwriters,” says Carly Klassen, Alberta Music’s Executive Director. “The legacy of this program will carry forward and increase the awareness and quality of art being created in this city.”
Mentorship and collaboration have always been at the forefront of Mallory’s endeavours and musicians of all skill levels are invited to take advantage of her workshops or sign up for one-on-one mentorship, all at no charge. Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 1, our Musician in Residence will spend her time on the third floor of EPL’s Stanley A. Milner Library, as well as in Makerspace’s recording studios. Her term concludes May 31, 2024. More information will be posted on EPL.ca.
Mallory will also act as the lead curator and jury member for Capital City Records during the open submissions cycle.
The opportunity for EPL to host and steward the Musician in Residence program was made possible by the 2023 JUNOS Host Committee. EPL has been a long-standing advocate for local music, having launched the award-winning Capital City Records more than eight years ago, working with 250 artists and producing 300 albums!
"Edmonton has a vibrant local music scene, made evident by the many applications the Musician in Residence program received,” says Melanie St-Onge, EPL's Adult Services Manager. “The hiring committee was blown away by the quality and range of musical expertise and industry know-how that we saw in the applications.”
This is a huge year for music in Edmonton, and EPL cannot wait to see (and hear) what Mallory Chipman will accomplish!
