The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) recently announced the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) as an Innovations Initiative Honorable Mention during the 2018 ULC Annual Forum Awards Ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 6.
A panel of expert judges selected Voices of Amiskwaciy as an Honorable Mention from 220 submissions in 10 categories that demonstrate the value and impact of public library service. EPL received recognition in the category of Race and Social Equity.
Voices of Amiskwaciy is a digital public space that helps EPL forge powerful connections with Indigenous communities. Launched in 2017 in response to Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, Voices of Amiskwaciy hosts a collection of stories that offer into diverse cultures, experiences, histories and perspectives.
A team of library staff members held five consultations with Indigenous community members, leaders and organizational professionals to develop the site, and continue to work with, seek guidance from, and respond to Elders, artists, youth, educators, and the general community to ensure that Voices of Amiwksaciy remains insightful and meaningful.
The 2018 Top Innovators and Honorable Mentions were announced during a special Innovations Celebration in Baltimore. Award winners were recognized for their innovative programs, services and operating practices.
