Vinyl Record Etiquette

As you explore our vinyl collection, it's important to handle and care for the records properly to ensure optimal sound quality and longevity. Here are some tips:

  • Hold the Record Correctly: When handling a vinyl record, always hold it by the edges or the label in the center. Avoid touching the grooves, as fingerprints and oils from your fingers can affect playback quality.
  • Store Records Vertically: Store vinyl records vertically in their sleeves or in a dedicated record storage unit. Storing them flat or leaning can cause warping and damage to the records.
  • Clean Records Regularly: Dust and dirt can accumulate on vinyl records, affecting sound quality. Use a soft, anti-static brush or record cleaning solution to gently clean the surface of the record before each play.
  • Handle with Care: When placing a vinyl record on the turntable, handle it gently and avoid dropping or scratching it.
  • Returning the Record: When returning the record to the library, please do not drop it in the exterior return chute. Instead, kindly return it to the customer service desk. Vinyl records can also be returned at any EPL location if you are unable to return them to Stanley A. Milner Library.
